On Oct 21, 2026, Yadollah Javani of Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned that internet cables under the Strait of Hormuz could be targeted if Iran is attacked. That's a threat, not an attack. Almost all data between continents travels through 500+ undersea fiber-optic cables, and there are 150-200 cable breaks a year, mostly from fishing gear and anchors. Recent cuts: Red Sea 2024 (a damaged ship's anchor), Baltic Sea 2024, and a Philippines-Singapore-Hong Kong link on Oct 2, 2026. Industry figures put Hormuz at under 1% of world international bandwidth, so the world wouldn't go dark, but the Gulf would feel it.
