Hell’s Angels (1930), directed by Howard Hughes, is nearly a century old — and yet it still managed to surprise me.
In this video review, I take a closer look at Hell’s Angels not as a comparison to other films of the era, but as a standalone achievement. I discuss the contributions and on-screen presence of Ben Lyon, James Hall, Jean Harlow, and especially Roy Wilson, one of the real pilots featured in the film. Of all the people in the movie, Roy Wilson stood out to me the most — his demeanor felt natural, unforced, and authentic, as if he wasn’t acting at all.
Many of the people involved in Hell’s Angels were actual pilots, and that realism gives the film a level of credibility that’s hard to fake. I also talk about a remarkable photograph of Roy Wilson from 1927, standing in front of an airplane with his mother after taking her on a flight — a human moment that makes his tragic death in a plane crash just a few years later, in 1932, even more poignant.
This review also explores:
What happened to the actors and actresses after the film was completed
How many careers — and lives — were cut short
Howard Hughes’ audacious decision to push early sound and film technology far beyond what was considered practical at the time
Why the aerial combat scenes still feel tense and immersive
And why the dirigible (Zeppelin) sequences remain some of the most haunting and visually fascinating moments in early cinema
Hell’s Angels may not feature great acting across the board, but there are scenes that are genuinely riveting — moments where I found myself on the edge of my seat. Considering this film is 96 years old, that’s no small accomplishment.
This movie turned out to be far better than I expected, and absolutely worth the time spent watching it.
