Our journey to a quirky bach in Arthur's Pass on the 20th of December.
The journey takes you through the Southern Alps, and the landscape changes dramatically as you climb higher.
At a cafe stop, I met a cheeky Kea! Keas are the world's only alpine parrot and they're incredibly smart - they've been observed working together to solve problems and are known for stealing anything shiny (including windscreen wipers from cars!). They're also endangered, with only about 3,000-7,000 left in the wild.
We spent the night in a quirky bach nearby. "Bach" comes from "bachelor pad" - these simple holiday homes became popular in New Zealand in the early 1900s when Kiwis wanted affordable getaways.
Arthur's Pass village itself is New Zealand's highest settlement and gets hit with some serious weather - it can snow here any month of the year!
