Children delight us with their bold and brilliant use of language and ways of describing the world. “A clown is a ‘happysad’.” (Emma, 4) "Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen." (Bobby, 7) As we get older, we learn to fill our world with empty words, adding volume, not value. Business writers aim to ‘resolve issues’ and ‘apologise for any inconvenience this might cause you’. They promise ‘a robust framework to engage stakeholders, deliver key messages and drive programmes and projects’. Loads of words: little or no meaning. Sue’s talk illustrates how to blaze a business trail with words that are a treat, not trite, to read. Sue Calthorpe has been a writer for 40 years, working as a journalist and sub-editor before setting up her own company in 1986.
She now spends half her time writing and the other half teaching, working with public and private sector organisations across the world to give them a distinctive voice that’s listened to, and heard, in a crowded market. Sue especially enjoys helping technical specialists explain and illuminate their subjects for lay audiences and works with data scientists, economists, financial experts, lawyers, policy officials and risk analysts. She co-wrote a TED talk with a client in New York in 2018 (currently with 1.8 million views) and is also currently co-editor of Living with Disability magazine.
She has a terrifically supportive husband without whom she couldn’t work as effectively, three children and two grandchildren but sadly no pets because she’s out too much. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
