The emergency was declared following multiple attacks by China, prompted by the country’s involvement in attempting to prevent the Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The United Kingdom pledged to deploy troops to Taiwan to prevent further damage or invasions after China declared war following Taiwan’s refusal to surrender the previous day. Years after this war had subsided, many believed that, while it was important for Taiwan to remain independent, UK civilians felt the country had been dragged into a proxy war.
