The reverse ring allows you to use a lens backwards and so make it into a macro lens. It fits on the front of the lens and then fits onto the camera in exactly the same way a lens would. Obviously, because the lens does not physically touch the camera, there are no automatic functions here - everything is manual.

The reversal ring seems to reverse most things. For example, to get as close as possible to the subject, you should set the lens to infinity. If you have a zoom, you should set it to its shortest length. If you have a kit lens (18-55mm) you should get a reversal ring with a 52mm diameter. you cannot focus the camera normally. It is best to focus by actually moving the camera to get the image pin sharp., as a result, it is a good idea to use a tripod to keep ythe camera steady.

Reversal rings are a fun way to try out macro photography. They are very basic, but also very cheap. Perhaps best of all, they force you to think about what you want to achieve and how to go about it. When all the auto features are stripped away, it is just you, your camera and your imagination.
