Today we are going to go over three specific techniques for training your skills in miniature painting. I always felt I had a hard time progressing some skills just by painting individual models —sometimes you just need to isolate the muscle you want to build. So, I designed specific training exercises for myself to focus in on, the areas where I was struggling.

In this video, we are heading to the sparing mat to look at:

Non-Metallic Metal : We strip away the complexity of a full model and use cheap plastic sword picks to master light placement, glazing, and volume. It’s the fastest way to learn NMM without ruining a hero model.

Painting with Intention | Brush Control : A discipline exercise using only two paints (Black & White). By removing color choices, we force ourselves to focus purely on value, contrast, and placing the brush exactly where the light hits—creating a dramatic, noir style that teaches steady hands and decisive strokes.

Chromatic Mixing : We stop using black to shade our colors. Instead, I’ll show you how to use other colors to create "Chromatic Shadows" that keep your models vibrant and rich, even in the darkest recesses, without washing out.
