Overview of Israel's Borders with Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon

Описание: The State of Israel was established in May 1948, one thousand eight hundred and seventy eight years after the destruction of the 2nd Temple in Jerusalem and loss of Jewish sovereignty of the homeland. Although understood and greeted with blessings from many nations afar, local Arab and Muslim nations were not very friendly at start and the certainty on the reborn Jewish State was not clear. Seven decades later we might forget the great challenges of the first decades. We might speak about some of those challenges more in future podcasts.

We are now just reviewing the current borders of the State of Israel. Some of them have become accepted and agreed on through peace treaties with the neighboring states and some are still in place de-facto either through the unilateral position of the government and patrol of the IDF and some might in certain circumstances be negotiated in the future.

Israel has common borders with four countries. Egypt in the South-West, Jordan in the East, Syria in the North-East and Lebanon in the North. Israel’s border with Egypt in the South was originally drawn by the British in 1906 to keep the Ottoman’s at a safe distance from the Suez canal. Israel’s army crossed over that line and captured the Sinai peninsula in 1956 and again in 1967. But, in 1979 both countries signed a Peace agreement and returned to their positions on the lines drawn by the British from Rafiah to Eilat.

Israel’s border with Jordan is along or more precisely in the middle of the Jordan river, although Jordan doesn't recognize Israel’s control of what they call the West Bank, in practice Israel’s army patrols the west side of the river there as well, as it has for over 50 years.

Israel has controlled the Golan Heights since 1967 and declared sovereignty there in 1981, this move was recognized by the United States in 2019 under the U.S. President Donald Trump. Although other countries still refuse to acknowledge Israel’s claim to this land.

The border with Lebanon has been the same for the most part since Israel’s war of independence in 1948, there are still no relations between Lebanon and Israel.

There are different types of borders, surely when speaking about the land of Israel. In this episode we spoke about the political borders of the modern state of Israel. Although there may be those who have other ideas about where those borders should be drawn for better or for worse these are the areas under Israels control and responsibility today.

Other types of borders that we will address in following podcsts include natural divisions like Shefela, the lower grounds by the sea, HaHar the mountain region, the desert, the Galil. And other types of borders could be historical and biblical borders that we read about in the Bible and prophetic borders of the vision of the Prophets. Stay tuned.
