A tour of SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina – The City That Rose Again

Описание: Hi everyone! In this video, I visit the iconic capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, namely Sarajevo. Many of you might only have heard of the city and country in relation to the Bosnian War (which lasted from 6 April 1992 until 14 December 1995), but this is a city (and country) that has some breathtaking scenery, impressive architecture and interesting stories. It offers a cultural education like few places ever could. It is nicknamed the 'Jerusalem of Europe' - it features mosques, a Catholic church, an Orthodox church and a synagogue in close proximity.

The vlog starts off with me standing opposite the Sarajevo Town Hall (or Sarajevo City Hall) and I also mention the meaning behind the so-called Sarajevo Rose created after the Siege of Sarajevo (which lasted from 5 April 1992 until 29 February 1996). On a more lighthearted note, I tell the story of Inat Kuća, the Bosnian house moved by the Austro-Hungarian empire one brick at a time. The house is now a restaurant next to the Miljacka River.

I then walk along the river, giving more details about the Bosnian War and the demographic split of the country. I mention that the political system is particularly complex, with a system designed to have input from Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats.

The Latin Bridge is our next stop, where I talk about its connection to World War I. Afterwards, I head to the Ottoman Old Town where I explore some alleys, notice some impressive architecture and drink a Bosnian coffee. I also form several impressions of Sarajevo including its people, and compare my experience in 2025 to my previous visit in 2018. I also visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and mention some technological firsts of Sarajevo. I continue to walk the streets of Sarajevo and talk of my experiences watching the news growing up in 1990s South Africa.

Sarajevo is also the place where East meets West - for the next part of the vlog, I visit the Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures Line and explore the Austro-Hungarian part of the city. I explain why one part of the city feels like you are walking in Istanbul, and when crossing the line it feels like you are exploring Vienna. I briefly visit my hostel and give a room tour, before visiting more sights including the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Walking a bit in circles, I stumble across an entertainment area of the city featuring several bars and restaurants, and briefly try to visit the 16th century Ottoman shopping mall, Bezistan. I walk back to the Austro-Hungarian part of the city and walk towards the Eternal Flame. From here, I do more exploring off the off-the-beaten-track parts of the city.

In the final part of the vlog, I take you uphill and visit the Kovači Cemetery. Many people who died in the Bosnian War are buried here. I then head to the Yellow Fortress for an unforgettable view of the city and give my closing thoughts. Or wait, is there perhaps a bonus feature in this video?
