It’s such a seemingly easy question that should be deserving of a straight forward answer, however, the truth of the matter is, whether or not it is hard to learn the guitar depends on so many different components, and therefore, we will have to go into a little bit more detail.

So, first of all, let’s figure out what you actually mean by learning the guitar. Do you want to learn just a few chords so you can play a couple of folks songs? Or do you want to get to an advanced level following the footsteps of one of your guitar heroes? Because that will ultimately determine how we can answer the question as to whether or not it is hard to learn the guitar.

If you want to ultimately get to an advanced level that goes beyond just playing a dozen of rather basic guitar chords, than you will have to out in more effort. I think that’s pretty obvious. Learning just a few chords is not all that complicated, It’s like starting a car – that’s one thing, but most of us wouldn’t want to stop there. They also want to know how to get the car out of the driveway and onto the road. The same is true for playing the guitar. After you know your first few chords, you will likely want to expand on that and learn more things that will make you a better guitar player. And while things usually get more challenging from a technical perspective the farther you advance in your guitar journey, your own playing skills will develop faster.

Now the next question is regarding the guitar learning approach. There are obviously many different ways of learning to play guitar. So another typically question I get is: is it hard to learn guitar by yourself? And usually what people really try to ask me is: is it harder to learn guitar on your own compared to leaning the instrument with a teacher or following a course? For the vast majority of guitar beginners, I think it is fair to say that the answer is: Yes, it is much harder to learn guitar by yourself? Now, I know that some of you will likely disagree with me. Of course, there are guitar players who are autodidacts, never took a lesson and everything is self-taught. But as I said, this is rather the exception than the rule. The fact remains, that for most of us as we made the decision to learn something new, we will likely require some external help in one way, shape or form.

The biggest problem out there is perception. What do I mean by that: well, the Internet is a blessing and a curse. Because of all the resources available to you online these days, learning guitar is not as hard anymore as it used to be. With a few clicks you can easily get an answer to most of your guitar questions. The problem however is, that the Internet is also loaded with scams and offers that are just completely unreasonable. These offers suggest that learning guitar is not hard. You are being promised that you can learn guitar fast and without any effort. However, this is simply inaccurate. I realize that people want to make money with their products and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. And to be clear, I am not saying that all offers are scams: there are clearly some great online guitar teachers and products out there who are reputable and very useful! But I’m sure you get my point, because “Learning guitar in your sleep” should ring some alarm bells in your head and I personally would certainly not recommend that you spend any money on an offer like that.

So, to wrap this up: Is learning guitar hard? Well, if you don’t know anything about the instrument, then my answer is: Yes, very likely it is harder than you would think. However, if you have the right mindset, reasonable expectations and if you are willing to accept that learning a new skill requires some commitment and practice, then you are in great and in that case I feel it’s safe to say that learning guitar doesn’t have to be hard at all.
