Questions have been raised on the ongoing drive against drugs in Punjab from the very beginning. The drive was launched soon after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls when seriousness of the situation dawned on the Punjab Government. Now some of those fears are coming out to be true.
Last week, a court in Muktsar has ordered the registration of a case against an ASI and two constables of the Police for registration of false case against an activist of the Congress. The Police had in June last year registered a case against one Talwinder Singh Mintu from a village near Malout for carrying around 1 kg intoxicant in his car. Now it comes out on the basis of telephone details, that the whole case was concocted and that the accused was not where he was shown to have been. The accused has been acquitted and a case ordered to be registered against the cops.
Since the drive against drugs has been re-launched, the government would do well to set in place a system of checks and balances against false cases being registered and also Akali activists resorting to political vendetta in connivance with police officials.
