Hawk’s Story:
Henry Lee Currie Jr.
October 4, 1934 – December 6, 2024
Henry Lee Currie Jr. was born on October 4, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, to Henry Lee Sr. and Eloise Currie. The eldest of two sons, he grew up in the Ida B. Wells community with his brother Charles. He attended Doolittle Elementary School and Tilden Technical High School, where he excelled in wrestling, softball, basketball, and football.
Henry’s passion for music led him to join The Five Frenchmen, a Doo-Wop group featured in Doo-Wop: The Forgotten Era as one of the best groups never to achieve stardom. He also sang with other groups, sharing his musical gifts with friends and the community.
As an exceptional athlete, Henry played quarterback for the Chicago Panthers, a semi-pro football team, and was scouted for professional baseball before a bicycle accident shifted his focus to softball. His career as a 16-inch softball pitcher was legendary, culminating in his induction into the 16-Inch Softball Hall of Fame in 2001.
Henry worked for several employers, including Kuppenheimer Clothing Company, where he played on the company softball team. He later built a long career as a Custodial Engineer for the Chicago Board of Education, retiring after years of committed service.
In 1955, Henry married Sarah Beaugard, and together they raised eight children. Later in life, he met Annie Lee Hughes, and they married in 1994, remaining devoted to each other until his final moments.
Henry was preceded in death by his children Henry Orlando, Yolanda Regina, and Stephan (“Dinky”). He is survived by his children Steven Sr. (Kathy), Kevin, Deborah (Darnell), Herschel, Reginald (Darice), and Charles; stepchildren Carlitha, LaTanya, and Shawnda (Littrell); as well as 35 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren who deeply cherished him.
Henry Lee Currie Jr. will be remembered for his remarkable athleticism, musical talent, and steadfast devotion to his family. His legacy of love and excellence will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
