In this short episode filmed during the 2020 pandemic, I take a journey into my backyard to capture some footage during Lāhainā noon. This is a special time in Hawai`i when the sun travels directly overhead, causing shadows to be projected only directly underneath people and objects. I planted a vertical stake in the ground to show how strange and other-worldly these precious moments are while the brain attempts to figure out perspective. Right before your eyes, it looks like objects were (poorly) photoshopped into reality.
Lāhainā means “cruel sun“. But another way to say that the sun is directly overhead is: “Kau ka lā i ka lolo, a hoʻi ke aka i ke kino”, which translates to: “rests the strong sun on the brain, and retreats the shadow into the body.”
