The original Resident Evil 4 is one of the most influential games of all time. Not only did it path the way for third person action games with a over-the-shoulder camera, but also properly showed how to do a complete reimagining of a franchise.
Resident Evil 4 was a huge departure from its predecessors and introduced all kinds of new gameplay mechanics. Rather than mostly focusing on horror, the action took the front stage. The tempo of the game was always high with enemies lurking around every corner, but also finding something new to loot or upgrade. The action was solid, the loot you found actually had a purpose and the overal feel and atmosphere was unlike anything we had seen. And it still holds up today with the remake. Because most people remember Resident Evil 4 for the "village" sections, but that is only 30% of the entire game. The castle and the island that come afterwards are a step down when it comes to its atmosphere, but the gameplay is solid enough to where these areas are still enjoyable. Tension is always high and there isn't a moment when you are desperately looking for another bit of ammo.
The game offers enough new surprises for old veterans as well and I cannot wait to replay this game over and over with new upgrades and see what kind of shenanigans I can come up with.
