India on and off the Rails, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Darjeeling and Highlights from Delhi - 4K

Описание: In this series of videos the aim is not just to show the Indian Mountain railways visited as part of this Railway Touring Company “Railways of the Raj” holiday, but to also highlight some of the activities and places experienced away from the rails. We start off with highlights from the truly unique Darjeeling Himalayan Railway where are treated to the sights and sounds of an ancient steam locomotive still doing the job it was built to do more than 100 years ago. The train travels next to, on or just a short distance away from the “Hill Cart Road” between Siliguri and Darjeeling often having to share the limited space with road traffic that wasn't always prepared to yield to the little train, leading to some interesting situations … have you ever seen a train back up to let a lorry past? We stayed in Darjeeling at the Windamere Hotel, a colonial style bungalow complex set in lovingly tended gardens looking much as it must have looked a century earlier, the hotel staff even offered to light the coal fires in guest rooms as temperatures could drop to single figures after sun set. The hotel was like a movie scene for a period drama set at the time of the British Raj, it was a wonderful experience. We also visit a zoo, a Tibetan refugee self help centre and a temple as well as taking a look around the fascinating town. When it was time to leave Darjeeling we were treated to a hair raising car journey to Bagdogra airport for our flight to Delhi where after a good nights sleep we visited the main shopping area of the old town in a bicycle rickshaw along with some of the regular tourist hot spots such as Mahatama Gandi's resting place, Humayun's Tomb, the Red Fort and the Rewai Steam Centre.
