A powerful and widespread winter storm that began in the southwestern United States has swept across large parts of the country over the past days. The system, driven by a deep low-pressure area, first developed over New Mexico and northern Texas before moving into Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri, and then spreading toward the Mississippi Valley and the eastern and northeastern states.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the clash between bitter Arctic air and warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico intensified the storm, producing heavy snowfall, severe blizzard conditions, freezing rain, and a sharp drop in temperatures. Snowfall totals in some areas reached 40 to 45 centimeters, and more than 180 million people across dozens of states were directly affected.
