A simple way to increase your throwing distance in a gradual manner.
Begin throwing at your usual warmup distance. Once comfortable, begin taking single steps away from the target - slightly out of your comfort zone - and throw. With each throw you hit, take another step backward (further from the target).
If you miss a throw, simply remain at that distance and throw two or three more times. If you keep missing, take a step or two forward and attempt your throw - don’t start all over at your warmup distance. Once you’re hitting the target again, begin taking a single extra step back once again with each successful hit. Eventually, at least for that particular day and time, you’ll reach your distance limit.
which is why it’s good to measure your distance with an actual tape measure and not just paces and mark the measured spots.
This way, You’ll have a figure that you can carefully work on increasing. It might not work out so well on some days, and other days you’ll surprise yourself. The whole process is very meditative and focusing, provided you aren’t trying to tune out too many distractions. No matter how good you are, we all have good days and bad days.
*(conversely, with many Shurikenjutsu schools, the student starts close to the tatami mat and with each successful throw, they take a step backward. Once the student misses a throw, they then begin stepping toward the target after each following throw until they are out of shuriken.)
Look through the target. Focus, breathe, and allow the weapon to “throw itself”.
Keep throwing!
Cheers
