Hebrews chapter 5 explains why Jesus is the true and perfect High Priest. The chapter begins by describing the role of the earthly high priest. He represents the people before God and offers sacrifices for sins. Yet every human priest shares the same weakness as the people. He must first offer sacrifice for his own sin before he can minister for others.
Hebrews then shows that Christ’s priesthood is different. Jesus did not appoint Himself. The Father declared Him to be both Son and Priest, fulfilling Psalm 2 and Psalm 110. He is the priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
The chapter then turns to the suffering of Christ. During the days of His flesh, Jesus offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the One able to save Him from death. The Gospels reveal this moment most clearly in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus faced the cup of judgment that He would drink for sinners.
Hebrews says that although He was the Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered. This does not mean Jesus moved from disobedience to obedience. It means that through real human suffering He fulfilled the path of perfect obedience that mankind had failed to walk. From His baptism, where He declared the need to fulfil all righteousness, to the agony of Gethsemane and finally the cross, the Son obeyed the Father completely.
Because of that obedience, Hebrews says He was perfected and became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him.
This chapter prepares us for the deeper teaching about Christ’s priesthood that follows in Hebrews 7. Jesus is not just another priest. He is the eternal High Priest who truly brings mankind into the presence of God.
