Space Exploration - CPE Writing Part 2 - Cambridge Proficiency Writing with Comments
Space Exploration
This essay has been written by Roland Simon
The desire to discover the world has been deeply ingrained in us. Whether space exploration can be singularly beneficial for us or a waste of money is open to debate.
The author of the first text highlights the fact that we have to face up TO many difficult issues on the Earth, such as over population and global warming.
When I think of space exploration I conjure up images of science fiction movies. We relish playing with the conceptS of time travel, parallel universes and contact with extra-terrestrial life forms. These ideas appear to be far-fetched at first, but our cave-dweller ancestors could not envisage that we WOULD build spaceships and leave our planet. Today scientists do not have to bE afraid of being killed FOR their “heretic” thoughts. Many visonary daredevilS were murdered FOR their pioneering ideas in the medieval times. We deplete our natural resources and put many species on the verge of extinction. We do not want to give up our explotation which continues to perpetuate the problem. Therefore, setting off ON A space voyage COULD be beneficial for us. We might come across a planet, which harbourS alien life and a new material may solve our energy-hunger issues.
The writer of the second text stresses that we should focus on protecting our home. Space exploration is originally driven by political rivalries and ambitions, as a matter of fact. The 20th century has witnessed a fierce competition between Russia and the USA. Eventually, they could FALL over the EDGE OF THE precipice of global war. China has joined the so-called space club recently, building its own space station. Many tax-payers object to funding space exploration. The space agencies have no intention of sharing every detail OF how they spend our money. Moreover, many hospitals struggle to maintain their facilities on account of tight budgetS. We should bear in mind that we can replace fossil resources for renewable energy. Although there has been an incessant quest for intelligent life and new materials in space, we have not YET discovered the deepest part of the Oceans yet. We do not know what we can find AT the bottom of the water, in the empire where the sunshine cannot dare to SHINE.
To sum up, I am weighing up the pros and cons I would say that space exploration has to play an important role in our society FOR THE foreseeable future. However, it is conceivable to me that saving our blue planet should be given priority over this matter.
