Rogers dropped on nought after a genuine edge and England looked to be paying the price as he went on to hit two outrageous maximums.

There is definitely something in the pitch for the bowlers though, with plenty of balls going just past the edge. Stokes makes the breakthrough as Rogers looks for yet another big shot, this time picking out Adam Lyth at Long off.

Mark Wood then bowls David Warner, the ball straightening slightly and just clipping the top of off stump.

Smith survives a couple of LBW appeals but can only look on as Broad takes an outstanding catch low to his left off his own bowling.

Voges is the next man in and gets off the mark with a lovely straight drive for two, then gets a bit of luck as an edge skids down to the third man boundary.

Clarke, who looked to be struggling early on then finds his rhythm and a decent partnership sees Australia through to lunch on 72-3.
