In this video, we check out some GE halogen MR16 light bulbs I purchased at Lowe's to use in my kitchen light fixture. They are 50 watts, 120 volts, and have GU10 twist-and-lock bases. They have an interesting feature to them, where they have "split" reflectors and some of the light can shine from the back of the bulb. This is useful for fixtures with shades, or in my case, fixtures where the back of the bulb is exposed.
The bulbs are sold in three-packs at Lowe's for about $16. They are some of the only 50W GU10-based MR16 halogens still sold, as they are "dim" enough that they do not fall under the ban from last year. The packaging is pretty pitiful, as it cannot be resealed. However, the bulbs inside seem to be of good quality. They have clear glass on the front, and you can see the halogen capsule inside. It extends behind the reflector, which is how it achieves the "split reflector" design. The back of the bulb is frosted, and the very back is not covered by anything internally, allowing the light to pass through. The GU10 base is made of ceramic.
When installed in a shade fixture, these bulbs look much better than normal versions. The 25° narrow floodlight pattern is sufficient to illuminate a room with multiple bulbs. The color temperature, brightness and dimming, and CRI of the bulb are as to be expected. Overall, I like these bulbs and would recommend them to anyone who has MR16 fixtures with shades or exposed parts.
These bulbs will be used in my kitchen track light fixture, to replace some bulbs that burnt out recently. There are three of these GE bulbs and three Philips ones in that fixture, and the GEs have been in place longer. The GEs are rated for 2000 hours of operation, whereas the Philips ones are rated for 3000 hours. However, all three GE ones have outlasted two out of three Philips ones by months. So it's clear that the Philips ones are no good, I would avoid those at all costs. Meanwhile, I highly recommend these GE ones to anyone looking for good MR16 GU10-based bulbs that are still sold.
