I was out at the Froghair and it was a good opportunity to do a comparison between then 1947 D4 6U and the '66 D4D. It's interesting to see what Caterpillar changed in 20ish years and what remained the same.
Horsepower between the two is surprisingly close, only later when the turbo'ed versions of the D4D came along did the HP go up significantly. There's about a 3,000 pound increase in weight on the bare tractor from 6U to D4d, larger fuel tank, and in this case direct electric starting vs. starting engine.
Later D4 U series offered direct electric start and even in the '60's you could get a starting engine on a D4.
Hydraulics are far more integrated into the D4D that the earlier 6U.
