How to stay safe from malware .
What is malware?:
Malware is made up of two words: Malicious and Software.
Malicious means harmful or bad.
"Software is a set of instructions or programs that tell a computer, phone, or other digital device what to do and how to do“
"Malware is a type of malicious software designed to enter a computer, phone, or network to steal data, damage files, or take control without permission.“
Malware spreads in different ways, such as through infected email attachments, fake software downloads, malicious websites, or USB drives.
Once inside a system, it can run harmful tasks without the user knowing such as stealing useful information, deleting files, slowing system etc.
Types of Malware
VIRUS: Vital Information Resources Under Seize
A virus infects files, spreads when opened or shared, and damages data.
Example: ILOVEYOU Virus – Spread through email, deleting files and corrupting systems.
WORM: Self-Spreading Malware
Worms spread automatically, slowing networks and stealing data.
Example: WannaCry – A ransomware worm that encrypted files and demanded ransom.
ADWARE: Advertising-Supported Software
Adware displays excessive ads and may redirect users to unsafe sites.
Example: Fireball – Hijacked browsers to show ads and collect user data.
SPYWARE: Secretly Spying Software
Spyware secretly steals personal information like passwords and bank details.
Example: Pegasus – Monitored mobile phones, tracking messages and calls.
ROOTKIT: Hidden Control Malware
Rootkits hide in a system, giving hackers secret control.
Example: Sony BMG Rootkit – Installed through CDs, allowing unauthorized access.
TROJAN HORSE: Disguised Malware
A Trojan looks like safe software but harms the system when installed.
Example: Zeus Trojan – Stole financial data by recording keystrokes.
RANSOMWARE: Data Locking Malware
Ransomware encrypts files and demands payment for decryption, making data inaccessible.
How It Spreads:
Through phishing emails, fake downloads, or security vulnerabilities. Once inside, it locks files and demands ransom, often in cryptocurrency.
Example: WannaCry (2017) – Spread worldwide, encrypting data and demanding Bitcoin for recovery.
