STATE LAWYER AND SALES OFFICER ARRESTED UNDER CIVIL AVIATION ACT

A state lawyer and a sales officer were arrested by police in Madang this week for allegedly breaching sections of the Civil Aviation Act while under the influence of alcohol during a commercial flight.
Police reports state the incident occurred onboard Air Niugini Flight PX125 travelling from Wewak to Madang, where the two men—identified as 33-year-old state lawyer Western Lei from Parchen Village in East Sepik, and 27-year-old sales officer Alphonse Pove from Haruape Village in Gulf Province—behaved aggressively toward cabin crew and caused public alarm.
According to authorities, both men were heavily intoxicated during the flight and allegedly issued threats, used offensive language, and disrupted safety protocols in the cabin. Their disorderly conduct reportedly continued on the ground at Madang Airport during the stopover, when the aircraft was preparing to depart for Port Moresby.
The pair has been charged under Section 275K (1)(a)(b) of the Civil Aviation Act 2000 for “behaving and acting in an offensive manner on an aircraft,” a serious offence under national aviation safety laws.
Madang Police say the matter is being treated with high concern due to the increasing number of in-flight disturbances caused by intoxicated passengers. The suspects have been denied police bail, pending further investigation and a court appearance.
Civil aviation officials have reminded the travelling public that all safety regulations apply while airborne, and any misconduct that threatens aircraft operations or passenger safety will be dealt with under the full force of the law.
