Product placement is the intentional reference to a real product, in an otherwise separate piece of media, primarily for payment – whether that payment be money, or goods, or services.
So a can of Acid Sting in the hands of Vincent D'Onofrio, in his latest blockbuster, might not be product placement. In fact, it might be prominently featured- obscuring Vdoff's intense monologue. But if Coca Coca didn't pay for it to be there, or make a deal for it to be there, it's just brand exposure.
