A temple in the middle of a forest… dedicated not to a goddess or saint, but to a demoness from the Mahabharata! Who was she, and why do locals worship her as a protector? Stay with me till the end, because this story will change how you see legends!
Welcome to Hidimba Devi Temple in Manali, Himachal Pradesh – built in 1553 CE by the ruler of Kullu.
Hidimba, a forest-dwelling rakshasi, married Bhima of the Pandavas and later performed penance here. Locals believe she disappeared into the earth at this very spot and became the guardian goddess of the valley.
[Unique & Mysterious Features:
This temple breaks every rule of traditional worship:
No idol – only a sacred rock, believed to hold Hidimba’s footprint.
Animal skulls and horns adorn the wooden doorway, hinting at ancient sacrificial rituals.
During festivals, a chosen woman is said to be possessed by Hidimba Devi, delivering prophecies and blessings.
Even today, locals whisper that Hidimba’s spirit still wanders the forests, protecting women and children."*
Would you dare to walk through these forests at night, knowing the spirit of a rakshasi might be watching over you? Comment below – Yes or No? I’d love to know how brave you are!
