Eulogy for Mr. Robertson Durand
Good morning, family and friends.
Today, we gather to celebrate the life of an extraordinary man, a husband, a brother, a mentor, a friend, a business partner, Mr. Robertson Durand—a man of faith, resilience, and unwavering love. My father’s journey began in the serene village of Pond Case, on the William Estate of Vanderfreze and Edwina Durand. Born into a family of seven boys and one girl, he grew up surrounded by the love and camaraderie of his siblings.
At the tender age of 14, my father left home to embark on an apprenticeship as an auto body repairman, specializing as a painter. Even as a teenager, he demonstrated an exceptional work ethic and determination to succeed. But it wasn’t just his career that defined him—it was his decision at the age of 18 to give his life to the Lord and Savior, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to God’s service.
The Goodwill Christian Union Mission Church became not just a spiritual home for him but also the place where he continued a relationship with the love of his life, my mother, Celina Durand. Together, “Robo” and “Celo,” as they affectionately called each other, built a life grounded in faith, love, and community. It was there that they also forged lifelong friendships with individuals like Irvin, Janet , Alwin, Corine, Martha, Franklin, Patsy, Elizabeth, and Brother Mac—people who shared their commitment to God.
Their union was blessed with three children: Amy, Daryl, and Jamal. Though my siblings and I moved to the United Kingdom, my father remained in Dominica, faithfully stewarding his responsibilities and maintaining his strong presence in the lives of his family and community.
My father’s greatest achievements weren’t measured by material wealth or professional accolades, though he was a successful businessman in his own right. His true legacy lies in the lives he touched. Through his business, he became a mentor to countless young men and women, imparting lessons of strong leadership, resourcefulness, and faith. His charisma was infectious, and his wisdom was profound. He had an incredible ability to make you believe in yourself and see possibilities where others saw obstacles.
While my mother might remind us that he wasn’t always the perfect husband, my father was humble enough to acknowledge his shortcomings. He continuously worked to improve himself, driven by the belief in a brighter future. His positivity and gratitude for life were unmatched. His motto was simple yet profound: “Do what you must and leave the rest to Christ.”
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, let us remember his larger-than-life presence, his dedication to God and family, and his unwavering faith. Let us celebrate the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of love, mentorship, and a life lived in service to others.
Rest in peace, Daddy. You have run your race, and you have run it well. Though you remained in Dominica, your impact and love transcended oceans. Until we meet again, we will carry your memory in our hearts and honor your example in our lives.
Thank you.

A Life Well Lived
A life well lived is a legacy,
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory,
Our grateful hearts will treasure.
Though your smile is gone forever,
And your hand we cannot touch,
We still have so many memories,
Of the one we loved so much.
Your memory is our keepsake,
With which we’ll never part,
God has you in His keeping,
We have you in our heart.
Rest in peace, dear father,
Your work on earth is done,
Your love lives on within us,
Until we meet again as one.
