(22 Jan 1980) The French government has said that the internal exile of soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov is "against the final act of Helsinki", and in Paris on the 23rd of January, hundreds of people demonstrated to protest against the USSR for arresting Sakharov. Sakharov was arrested by the Soviet government on 22 January and exiled to the city of Gorky. The Soviet Union, in its first comment since the arrest has called the dissident leader a "traitor" and accused him of passing on state secrets to diplomats in meetings at the us embassy. "a traitor is a traitor precisely because he sells himself out", the government newspaper Izvestia said.
In Paris, a group of demonstrators led by a Soviet dissident organisation, condemned the action and demanded immediate freedom for Sakharov. They carried placards demanding his release and offering, in exchange, the French Communist leader, Georges Marchais, himself a supporter of the Soviet government. French police intervened to prevent the demonstrators from getting too near the Russian embassy in Paris. Crowd scuffles broke out, but no injuries were reported: Unused footage for story: c0066599
