The world mushroom and truffle production has grown over the years, with a record production of about 8.5 million tons in 2011.
The top world producers include;Top ProducersChina: China tops the list of the world's largest producer of mushrooms with an annual production of about 5 million tons.


Italy: With an annual production of over 761,000 tons, Italy is the second largest producer of mushrooms in the world.
Mushrooms from the Netherlands are both wild and cultivated.
Apart from this, various kinds of non edible mushrooms are also utilized in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.


In 2019, the top exporters of Mushrooms, fresh or chilled were Poland with 464 million dollars, Canada with 241 million dollars, the Netherlands with 237 million dollars, China with 227 million dollars, and Ireland with 140 million dollars.

The three major mushrooms producing countries according to FAO data which are China, the USA, and Netherland account for more than 60 percent of the world production; however, the share of China itself is 46 percent which is about half of the world's mushroom production.

According to current Indian estimates, the mushroom production of India is about 1 metric ton, which is about 3 percent of the world's mushroom production.
Export in China accounts for less than 5 percent of its total domestic production and about half of it is to Asian Countries.

Considering that 95 percent of mushroom production in China is consumed locally, theconsumption per capita is likely to be over 10 kilograms per person per year.
In India,consumption is miserably low.
World processed canned and dried mushroom export is continuously increasing from 0.049 to 0.683 million tons over the last four decades from 1970 to 2010 as compared to the fresh mushroom export of 0.014 to 0.482 million tons but fluctuations in export are higher in the case of the processed mushroom.
The consumption of canned mushrooms is static and that of fresh mushrooms has increased continuously.


The largest importer of preserved or canned mushrooms is Germany with about 1,05,186 tons in 2007 according to FAO followed by Russian Federation with about 69,726 metric tons, the USA with about 67,058metric tons and Japan with about 32,757 metric tons.


China is the largest producer and consumer of mushrooms in the world with 15,68,523 metric tons production and 17,732 metric tons imports followed by the USA with 3, 59,630 metric tons production and 68,123 metric tons imports and the Netherland with 2,40,000 metric tonsproduction and 7,884 metric tons imports respectively.

The Trade of mushrooms in the European Union is significant as European Union mushroom production is about 27 percent of the world production according to FAO.
Per capita consumption of mushrooms in India has increased from 25 grams to 40 grams in the last 10 years.
