The operating Temperature of a LiPo battery is very critical in both charging as well as discharging. It is very common for us to be only considered with the maximum temperature that we should expect out of the LiPo battery. However, there are many more temperature related parameters that we must also be aware of. The minimum operating temperatures are also very critical in both chargin a LiPo battery pack as well as discharging a battery pack.
An absolute maximum temperature that we should expect out of the LiPo battery pack while discharging it is 140F or 60C. It is very critical to never exceed this temperature. Exceeding this temperature exposes yourself to safety risks as the battery pack becomes thermally unstable beyond this point. There is also loss of pack lifespan when the battery exceeds 140F. (60C) The maximum temperature while charging a LiPo battery pack is 115F or 46C.
As temperatures in the pack begin to rise, the chemical reaction that occurs inside the battery allows the internal resistance to decrease. As a result, we can expect better performance in both charging and discharging.
The minimum temperature for a LiPo battery pack is 32F or 0C. Your battery pack will begin to suffer a loss in performance below 50F or 10C. Below this temperature you can expect higher internal resistances and reduced capacity. If you require operating your RC vehicle in colder temperatures, be certain to maintain a battery temperature above 0C by warming the pack up.
Proper care of your LiPo battery will help achieve prolonged life and best performance.
