Описание: CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Experts who work in the mental health field hope the high profile suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain will serve as a moment to educate families about the warning signs of suicide and depression.

"There are a lot of things going on inside people that we're not aware of. This can be something that we can keep in mind when we're with our colleagues and friends," said Heather Smith Turner, Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Southwest Ohio.

Turner said there's a popular misconception that talking about suicide will encourage it but the opposite is true.

"Research shows that talking about it with a person actually reduces risk," Smith Turner said.

There are classic signs that a person may be suicidal or depressed such as talking about wanting to die and giving items away. But there are also less subtle signs such as self-isolation, sleeping too little or too much and increases in alcohol or drug use.

"I do believe that people who have suicidal thoughts hide it and are secretive about it because they're ashamed of it," said Anne Combs, of Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services. Combs said depression and other mental health problems can sometimes go undiagnosed.

She also said news about the high profile suicides can be difficult for those who have suicidal thoughts. But she and Smith Turner hope the cases will prompt people to seek help for their loved ones.

"I think we are the ones that can really help make a difference. Paying attention, listening, asking questions. Not being afraid to address it with someone that we wonder," Smith Turner said.

Smith Turner said suicides aren't always planned. She suicide can be an impulsive act triggered by a stressful event such as a job loss or ending a relationship. Staying in touch with loved ones who've experienced stressful events can go a long way in helping people who are depressed.

There is a 24-hour suicide prevention hotline. Anyone can call for help 1-800-272-8255.
