The 5-Day Journey: Embryo Development in the Lab
In the world of IVF, the embryology lab acts as a high-tech "nursery." Here is the step-by-step evolution from a single cell to a complex blastocyst.
Day 0: Fertilization
The journey begins. After the egg retrieval, embryologists introduce the sperm to the egg via Conventional Insemination (swimming in a dish) or ICSI (direct injection). This is the "zero hour" where the genetic blueprints first meet.
Day 1: The Zygote (The Check-In)
Roughly 16–18 hours later, we look for two circles in the center of the egg called Pronuclei (2PN). One contains the mother’s DNA and the other the father’s. If we see two, fertilization is successful!
Day 2 & 3: The Cleavage Stage
The single cell begins to divide. On Day 2, we ideally see 2 to 4 cells. By Day 3, the embryo should reach the 8-cell stage. At this point, the embryo is still the same total size it was as an egg; the cells are simply getting smaller with every split.
Day 4: The Morula (Compaction)
This is a critical transition. The individual cells begin to "compact," pressing against each other until their borders disappear. It now looks like a solid ball of cells called a Morula (Latin for "mulberry"). This is the stage where the cells first start communicating and deciding their future roles.
Day 5 & 6: The Blastocyst
The finish line for the lab stage. The embryo develops a fluid-filled cavity and differentiates into two distinct parts:
The Inner Cell Mass (ICM): The small cluster of cells that will eventually become the baby.
The Trophectoderm: The outer ring of cells that will become the placenta.
Once it reaches this stage, the embryo is ready for a transfer, biopsy for genetic testing (PGT), or cryopreservation (freezing).
