This demonstrates a screen arrangement in Logic X to simultaneously visualize score and midi of the same region. I'm not an expert on the notation system in Logic, but if you learn how to work it, this could be incredibly powerful as a demonstration tool. No audio in this hastily made video, but each note will sound whenever you select anything.
PROCESS
Create software instrument track
Create Empty MIDI Region (right click in the middle of the track)
Window -- Open Piano Roll
Window -- Open Score Editor
Double Click the Empty MIDI Region
Minimize main window, arrange Score and Piano Roll to top+bottom halves of the screen
I don't think it can't be done in GarageBand - the notation tools aren't included, and you can't pop out windows from the main screen. If anyone knows of a better way to do this, let me know.
