On Friday, March 11th, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for UNMIL and UN operations in Liberia, Farid Zarif, awarded United Nations medals to 56 members of the Pakistan contingent, PAKMED, who are responsible for operation of the UNMIL Level-II Medical Hospital.
SRSG Zarif conveyed gratitude to the Government and people of Pakistan for their continued commitment to the principles of the United Nations and for working to promote lasting peace and security – not just here in Liberia, but around the world.
Pakistan has contributed to supporting the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. During that time, Pakistani personnel have served in 43 UN peacekeeping missions across the globe. Today, nearly 8,000 Pakistani troops, military observers and police officers serve in the UN, making Pakistan the third-largest contributor to United Nations peacekeeping worldwide.
PAKMED has made contributions through routine medical and surgical care, provision of air evacuation, and provision of intensive care in life threatening emergencies.
SRSG Zarif noted the speciality of the 10 females members of the Contingent- all of whom belong to the Army Medical Corps and who have special professional capacities as gynecologists, military nurses, general practitioners, and intensive care nurses.
PAKMED has conducted lectures and seminars to increase awareness of endemic diseases including Malaria, Ebola, Lassa Fever, and other life threatening diseases. These were attended by the members of other contingents as well.
