India Restricts Bulk Fuel Purchases at Retail Pumps Amid Supply Concerns and Price Gaps

Описание: The Indian government has imposed temporary restrictions on industrial, commercial, and institutional consumers purchasing petrol and diesel from retail fuel stations. The move comes amid concerns that a widening gap between retail and bulk fuel prices has led large consumers to shift their purchases to retail pumps, increasing pressure on supplies intended for ordinary citizens.
Under the new order issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, bulk users must procure fuel through dedicated bulk sale channels or their own consumer pumps. The restrictions will remain in effect for up to 90 days and may be extended if necessary. Diesel purchases at retail outlets are now limited to vehicle fuel tanks or approved containers, with a maximum cap of 200 litres per customer or vehicle per day.
Authorities say the measure is aimed at preventing hoarding, black marketing, unauthorized procurement, and supply diversion amid ongoing global geopolitical uncertainties affecting petroleum supply chains. State governments and oil marketing companies have been directed to strictly enforce the rules. Violations could attract penalties under the Essential Commodities Act.
The government maintains that fuel supplies remain adequate and that these temporary controls are designed to ensure equitable distribution, prevent localized shortages, and safeguard uninterrupted access to petrol and diesel across the country.
