Today we take a look at the bran new Real Grade 2.0 Gundam. This is the first official 2.0 Real Grade release from bandai.
The real grade line premiered in 2010 and was a way for bandai to redesign some iconic mobile suits with a design focused on realism rather than anime accuracy. These models generally include greater surface detail, and come packed in with stickers as well as a premolded inner frame.
The premolded inner frame, known as the "advanced MS Joint" was revolutionary for the time, but since has had somewhat of a negative reputation for making kits a little more loose than they should be. Since 2010 the MS joint has been used in every kit...until today. The RG 2.0 Gundam is the first iteration of a real grade with no Advanced MS Joint involed with the build whatso ever. Since the RG Tallgeese the Advanced MS joint has been used in lesser capacity in every release, for this to be missing from the RG 2.0 is a turning point for the model kit line.
This 2.0 is based off the original RX-78-2 Gundam, the mobile suit that started it all. This is it's own design taking creative liberties from seemingly all forms of RX-78-2 design's that have came before it. Taking a look at this build we can see some influences from "the Origin" gundam design, the Ver Ka. Design, the PGU design and of course the original design from the anime.
This is a huge step up from the original 1.0 RG as the details have been increased on this kit 10 fold, not only on outward surface detail but also on the greebling within the inner frame as well as kit stability and articulation. I might go out on a limb here and say this is the most articulate RX-78-2 Gundam that we have seen so far.
The RG line is my favorite line of model kits and I cannot wait to see what bandai has in store for future releases. We have the RG akatsuki to look forward to later this year and I'm curious to see if the advanced MS joint will appear in that release or if it's fully put on the back burner only to be used by parts that benefit from that type of molding.
