Amid rising concerns over a possible LPG shortage in India, the Union government has stepped up monitoring to prevent pⱥnic buying of cooking gas cylinders. A high-level meeting chaired by Govind Mohan with Chief Secretaries and DGPs directed states to track social media rumours, LPG panic booking and misinformation about fuel supply. Police control rooms are now monitoring complaints related to petrol shortage, LPG delivery delays, and crowding at gas agencies to prevent law-and-order issues.
👉Essential Commodities Act Invoked
To secure household fuel needs, the Centre has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. Under the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, LPG cylinders, PNG for homes, and CNG for vehicles will get priority supply. Officials say over 60% of India’s LPG imports come through the Strait of Hormuz, where ongoing confl!ct has disrupted shipping routes.
👉Crackdown on Hoarding & Black Marketing
Authorities are tightening checks at LPG agencies, petrol pumps and fuel distribution centres to stop LPG black marketing and hoarding. According to Petroleum Ministry official Sujata Sharma, the normal LPG delivery cycle of about 2.5 days continues despite misinformation.
