Abstract: A new survey with the Green Bank Telescope over about 500 sq-degrees around the Galactic center has detected numerous neutral HI clouds entrained in the Milky Way's nuclear wind.
A sample of more than 200 of these "Fermi Bubble clouds" – selected from those that have the largest values of VLSR -- has been analyzed to examine the kinematics of the out-flowing neutral gas. Clouds are found between -335 less than VLSR less than +438 km/s; these are the largest positive LSR velocities ever reported for neutral gas in the Milky Way. The highest velocities are found furthest from the Galactic center, consistent with a model in which clouds are accelerated with a low outflow velocity close to the center, but reach velocities of at least 500 km/s at a distance of 4 kpc from the center. There are many outstanding questions about this population.
