If you don’t build your sauna correctly, it can grow mold as well.

Last month, Brian from Moldfinders tested this standard family sauna.

The findings were shocking.

He found over 470k molds growing at the floor of the sauna.

Even though the floor was seemingly clean.

Why is that?

Mold dies at temperatures above 150F or 60C.

That’s why people believe mold doesn’t grow in a sauna.

However, the temperatures in a sauna are unequal.

Hot air is lighter than cold air.

Which means hot air rises up and cold air plummets to the bottom.

That’s why hot air balloons stay in the sky.

That’s also why inside some saunas, temperatures on a floor level never get above 150f.

Giving room for mold growth.

But mold doesn’t typically grow in a bathroom either.

Bathrooms are never above 150F, and are also wet spaces.

But your bathroom room doesn’t have a wooden floor, which offers a suitable surface for mold to grow.

Bathrooms are also mechanically ventilated.

Ensuring they dry effectively after your shower session.

Poorly constructed saunas are not ventilated at all.

Allowing the sauna to stay humid for a long time after usage.

So to avoid intoxicating yourself with your sauna.

Make sure you have proper ventilation,

Allow your sauna to get sufficiently hot,

And let the sauna run for 30 minutes after the usage, so it dries properly.
