South African Road Adventure: Baardskeerdersbos to Cape Agulhas: EP 09

Описание: South Africa has some of the most scenic coasts in the world, with two of the best known ones being the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Agulhas. One of these has been mistakenly identified as the southern most point of Africa, while this distinction actually belongs to the other. To find out which of these is the Real McCoy, join us on a fascinating journey through historic towns, past the longest natural beach in the southern hemisphere, where we encountered the largest species of marine stingrays on our way to the southern most point of the African continent.

In this episode we also stopped at the town of Elim, a town with a beautiful Moravian church and name inspired by Scripture. Elim is found in Exodus of the Bible and is described as a place with 70 palm trees, where the Israelites found rest. The Western Cape town of Elim also became a place of rest for freed slaves. I encourage all readers to apply the motto of this church in their lives: Our Lamb has conquered, let us follow Him!

Agulhas Ocean House, our accommodation for the night, offered us a great place of rest! As its name suggests, the guesthouse is right opposite the ocean! Even more impressive, is that the back garden of this wonderful guesthouse is part of a national park, with beautiful birds and even wild deer walking through it! What's more, the breakfast and owners' hospitality is second to none!

During our visit to Cape Agulhas lighthouse, we came across a dead dolphin at the seashore. This is something rarely seen (more common would be other dead sea creatures, like jelly fish, seals and sharks). If you come across a dead animal on the beach, it's important not to touch the carcass or allow your dog near it, as dead sea animals can carry contagious diseases.

Near the lighthouse there's a 20m long Africa map. This was built in 2016 at a cost of R15 million rand, equivalent to around 1 million US$ at the time. My only other visit to Cape Agulhas was 40 years ago and the metal map of our continent is an impressive addition since the last time I came here!

Sheryl from our guesthouse recommended Earth Restaurant for lunch. This restaurant's the perfect place for a relaxing meal close to nature and it's less than 15 min drive from Cape Agulhas! They have a couple of vegan options, marked VV, as well as an extensive drinks menu. Something unique about this restaurant is that one can go and feed animals outside.

Not shown in the video, but also highly recommended is Zuidste Kaap Pub & Restaurant, where we went for dinner. They have good vegan meal options, as well as non-alcoholic drinks. Even my favourite drink of rooibos tea is available at this, the southern most restaurant on the African continent!
