Macau was handed over to China on 20 December 1999, ending 442 years of Portuguese rule and marking the final transfer of a territory still administered by Portugal. Under the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration, Macau became a Special Administrative Region of China under the principle of “one country, two systems,” retaining its own legal and economic systems. The handover ceremony was attended by Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio and Chinese President Jiang Zemin, symbolising a peaceful and negotiated transfer of sovereignty. The event marked the end of Portugal’s colonial presence in Asia and the beginning of a new era for Macau.
