Residents in Catia La Mar, north of Caracas, say they were jolted awake by explosions as U.S. strikes hit residential areas overnight on Jan. 3 when American forces arrested and removed president Nicolas Maduro.
Venezuela’s interior minister Diosdado Cabello said 100 people were killed, with a similar number injured, calling the attack “barbaric.”
“One moment there were noises, then whooshing sounds, and then explosions, we thought the buildings were going to fall onto us,” one resident said.
Officials say President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were injured during the operation, as residents describe ongoing fear and sleepless nights.
