These crystals look just like natural selenite or gypsum — but they’re not minerals at all!
These are man-made crystals of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP), also known as monoammonium phosphate (MAP) — the same compound used in fertilizers, fire extinguishers and crystal-growing kits.
ADP usually forms clear, prismatic crystals with a square cross-section and piramidal tip. Add a bit of alum, and they become long, needle-like and sharp — easily mistaken for natural gypsum.
Often they’re light green, either from the fertilizer that was used to make them or from added dyes, which makes them look even more convincing.
These clusters are fragile, dissolve in water, and sometimes are grown on real stone or matrix — but chemically, they’re artificial, not natural minerals.
Beautiful? Yes.
Natural? Definitely not.
