31 years ago, Vladimir Horowitz gave a concert in Berlin (in fact there was a spontaneous repeat one week later) that became legendary. Not only because Berlin was the first station after he had left the Soviet Union in 1925, but also because his playing in this concert was so free and so deeply heartfelt that at least in my opinion this concert was not only the peak of his 1986 tour but in his whole career as far as I know it. Of course it was not the peak of power and perfection in his life. Especially in the Kreisleriana there are many faults, but Horowitz played the work with much more spontaneity, speed and risk than in his also very fine studio recording the year before (two minutes faster).

The concert was broadcasted live. Fortunately I got a tape recording of this broadcast.

For the transfer I did not use any digital manipulations (equalizers etc). So you will hear not only the marvellous sound, but also some imperfections like FM noise and in some parts interferences of reception, especially FM twitter in the Scarlatti . To cope with this listen not too loudly. Remember the Scarlatti starts piano. But Schumann´s Kreislerianer was broadcasted at significantly lower level. Therefore increase volume when it starts.

The Berlin concert was not filmed and there seem to exist only few photos. Therefore only the first and the last 3 pictures are from the Berlin concert. The others come from Moscow, April 1986. Where possible (Scarlatti, Schubert-Liszt) I chose pictures of the same works.

Strictly speaking, it is perverse to offer the highest art of piano playing for reproduction by computer. Hence you should do everything you can to create best conditions for the art of Horowitz. Mind the following TIPS. FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT: set the volume control of the computer at 100% (less means less details, less brilliance, less dynamics etc.). Control volume by using the volume control of YouTube below the video at left side. Even better you take external speakers and control the volume with the amplifier. I recommend to use the 1080pHD option of YouTube and Google's Chrome browser (probably the best quality for YouTube), close all programs you do not need (and if you can also switch off the screen of your computer). Best connect the computer with a good HiFi system via a fine USB-soundcard (D/A-converter).
