How do you get medical care to communities that are isolated by poverty, mountains, dense jungle, and lots and lots of mud?
Floating Doctors may usually travel by sea, but when a Peace Corps volunteer working at the base of Jaramillo mountains called about a forgotten Ngabe indigenous community several hours deeper into the mountain jungle, the team deployed for a multi-day clinic on site.
It was a 'Lost World' community of about 350 people hidden a narrow valley; hours of slogging through mud with pack horses paid off when 176 patients were seen. Almost all of them had never seen a doctor in their lives, and most had never met a 'Merigini' (foreigner) before.
"Poor access to health care" doesn't mean health care that is too expensive for some people, or health care that is on the other side of town...it means never seeing a doctor in your life because you have never left your remote jungle home.
$450 sponsors a team of 8 volunteers for a three-day medical clinic into a remote community like La Sabana. Log on to www.floatingdoctors.com to donate $5 (the price of a hamburger) a month to help make real access to health care available to other communities like La Sabana.
Watch for parts 2 and 3 of the Floating Doctors Mission to La Sabana, coming soon!
