Melbourne, Derbyshire Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around six miles southeast of Derby, is the town of Melbourne.

Geographically, Melbourne is situated around two miles south of the River Trent. Its name is derived from Old English for 'mill by the stream', in reference to various mills that were situated from here to the Trent.

At the southern end of the town centre is the Parish Church of St Michael and St Mary. This dates back to the 12th century, with additions up to the 15th century and some 19th century restoration. The church is Grade I listed.

During the 14th century a royal manor was fortified and transformed into what would become Melbourne Castle. After the 1415 Battle of Agincourt, it was used to hold John I, Duke of Bourbon as a prisoner, where he remained for 19 years. The castle was demolished in the early 17th century, with only fragments remaining today.

In 1837 the Australian city of Melbourne was given its name from William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, indirectly deriving from this town via his title and family seat at Melbourne Hall.

In 1868 a railway station opened in Melbourne courtesy of the Midland Railway. This formed part of the Melbourne Line which ran between Derby and Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The station closed to passengers in 1930, but was later put to use during the Second World War as a military railway for training purposes. Today, public transport to Melbourne consists of direct buses from Derby, Swadlincote, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Burton-on-Trent and various other nearby locations.

Famous people from Melbourne, Derbyshire include travel agency pioneer Thomas Cook.
