St Mary's Wherstead Suffolk

Описание: A five minute drive from the A14 is the Church of St Mary's of Wherstead.

The church is a hidden gem and although almost completely restored in the 19th Century continues to enjoy it's commanding position overlooking the River Orwell.

The church and its proximity to the A14 and Orwell bridge means it is hard to ignore the constant hum of modern society whizzing past but nevertheless it is a magical place tucked away in the trees... I wondered how many locals even know it exists.

Sadly the church has also had to combat the scourge of modern society, vandalism and theft. It is therefore well secured (vandals & thieves beware) and I believe remains locked for the majority of the time outside of services.

The church itself originates from the 12th Century, has a 14/15th Century nave and chapel, with the tower being 15th Century.

The hill upon which the church sits has previously been used to good effect. Between 1600 and 1902 there was a large copper ball five feet in diameter installed at the top of the tower to act as a navigation aid for vessels sailing the Orwell (goodness knows how it was installed!)

The Arts & Crafts carved lychgate is in excellent condition, dates from 1894 and commemorates the Rev. Foster Barham Zincke whose ministry at the church lasted an incredible 52 years.

Trees again proved a significant challenge with a few hairy moments getting footage. Hopefully the shots of the Orwell Bridge and Ipswich in the distance will remind everyone there are plenty of secret places which can be visited to get away from the hectic pace of modern living.

The popular Suffolk Food Hall is nearby at the bottom of the hill, so the next time you are visiting why not take a stroll up the lane to visit yet another of Suffolk's lovely churches.
