This song gives me chills every time, no matter how many times I listen. Holy fuck.
For context, this was recorded in Mississippi in the 1940s and released way after the fact so we'll never know how old the song actually is or who the men are singing it which is a great tragedy in my eyes, though I am still thankful to have it preserved at all. Supposedly in the southern prisons it's tradition that these the songs are still passed down through aural tradition.
This video has been in the works since 2016 and almost complete since. I added the effects and no more than 20 seconds to complete it in the past couple weeks. In my freshman year of college my best friend discovered this song through a diversity course on African American work/prison songs and shared it with me, which is when I started this project. You might recognize David Guetta's "Hey Mama", which samples that one line. You know the one.
