Video of an 8-Car R160 (J) train stopping at Essex Street station towards Jamaica Center, opening only 3 doors throughout the entire train. Due to Winter Storm Fern, the (J) and (M) crews were directed to open crews manually. On most trains, only one door panel was opened by the Conductor's cabs (4th & 5th cars) as well as by the Train Operator (1st car). So even then, only half of each door opened. This would lead to added dwell times at stations while riders made their way to an open door panel.
The (J) and (M) both spend a significant part of their trip outdoors and it was decided to only open certain doors to avoid door malfunctions and subsequent delays/suspensions. To make this process less hectic, most trains had a crew of about 4 people for most of their trip. This type of operation is typically seen on the railroads (such as Metro North & LIRR) and is not traditionally used on the subway. The only example which comes close is boarding at 145th Street on the (3), however that does not require additional crew members.
