Mark Smith (Deaf Men Dancing), Garry Robson (Director of Fittings Multimedia Arts) and legendary Vogue “Mother” Darren Suarez formed the first “House” of D/deaf performers to walk in the Legendary House of Suarez Vogue Ball in 2017. The company are exploring the traditions of the international Houses of the vogue movement whilst bringing their unique deaf and disabled perspective to the party.
The House (the name for a team or family of performers who compete in balls) performed at the House of Suarez Se7en Deadly Sins ball in Liverpool in October 2017, bringing their own unique take on Vogue whilst incorporating sign language into the dance routines alongside amazing costumes and make-up.
The full process from auditions to the ball was recorded by First Take Film and Media to create a short documentary that follows the creation of the House leading to their debut performances. The company has researched the history of the balls and their celebration of diversity and difference and compared this to the lives and experiences of the members of The Unlimited House of Krip.
Following the hugely positive reception the Unlimited House of Krip received in Liverpool they were invited to take part in the Manchester Ball in February 2018 where they won overall best House as well as taking the trophy for the Fantasy category and battling in both the Solo and Lip-synch categories.
The short documentary, produced in partnership with First Take, is now available for screening and had its world premiere at the Eight International Hong Kong Deaf Film Festival on May 12th and its UK premier at the Liverpool Pride British LGBT Short Film Contest on May 21st. This event was the platform to select a finalist for the Iris Prize International LGBT Short Film Festival and The Unlimited House of Krip was selected and will screen at the festival in October 2018.
